Banana Split Ingredients

  • Banana: This recipe is the perfect way to use up overripe bananas. The riper, the better!
  • Cinnamon: Sprinkle a little cinnamon on the banana.
  • Greek Yogurt: I like Fage or Stonyfield Greek yogurt, but any kind will work. You could also use vanilla yogurt and skip the syrup.
  • Dairy Free: Use your favorite dairy free yogurt like coconut or almond.
  • Maple Syrup: Swap it with honey or agave.
  • Pecans: Chop two tablespoons of pecans. You can sub walnuts or almonds or omit them if you’re allergic.

How to Make a Breakfast Banana Split

  • Air Fry the Banana: Slice a ripe banana lengthwise, three-quarters of the way through, and top it with cinnamon. Air fry the banana for five to six minutes at 400°F until soft.
  • Greek Yogurt Sauce: While the banana cooks, combine a teaspoon of syrup with the yogurt.
  • Banana Split Toppings: When the banana is ready, top it with yogurt, cinnamon, pecans, and the remaining syrup.

Variations:

  • Drizzle the banana with chocolate syrup, almond butter, or peanut butter.
  • Fruit: Add fresh berries, pomegranate seeds, raisins, dried cranberries, or crushed-up freeze-dried strawberries.
  • Top your banana split with chocolate chips, granola, coconut chips, or coconut flakes.
  • Spices: Add a dash of nutmeg or cardamom, or substitute pumpkin pie spice for cinnamon.
  • Classic Banana Split: Make it dessert with whipped cream, chocolate syrup, sprinkles, and a cherry on top.

No Air Fryer? No Problem!

Bake the bananas in the oven at 400°F for 10 to 12 minutes.

  1. Perfect timing, as I had just picked up a bag of ripe bananas on the discount rack at the grocery store. This was a quick, easy, and delicious change for my breakfast. Topped with yogurt and granola.

  2. This was a big hit with my husband and me. I pulled the banana out after the air frying and placed it in a bowl, and put less yogurt on it. Other than that, followed the recipe exactly. The possibilities are endless of the toppings one can use. I will try dark chocolate and melt it with the banana (Hubbie’s suggestion). On a side note, your air fryer cookbooks (bought them both) are great! Thanks for simplifying air frying. Not only is air frying a healthier way of cooking, but add your recipes to it, I can see a healthier household in the near future.

  3. I made this today for my husband & I. Was so delicious & filling. I used sliced almond’s & maraschino cherries because it was what I had on hand. Will definitely make it again!

    1. I’ll bet cottage cheese would work well too – tons of protein and not as tangy as yogurt. If you’re not a fan of the texture, Hood makes a whipped kind now. Sweetened ricotta could also work.

  4. This was great! Everyone in the family loved it and it was quick enough to make during the week. I added some chocolate chips for the kids and they devoured it!

  5. My 8 year old son LOVED this and requested that I make it again as soon as possible. I sprinkled a little granola and some blueberries.

  6. I’ve made yogurt banana splits a lot before, but never thought of ways to change up the banana itself. Mixed the yogurt with powdered peanut butter, topped with crushed mixed nuts, chia seeds, hemp hearts, and some 90% dark chocolate. It definitely added something nice to the split!

  7. Thanks Gina for a fun flexible recipe. The first time I made it I added Monk fruit to the yogurt and used sugar free maple syrup.
The next morning I mixed in 2Tbs dry powdered peanut butter into the yogurt, skipped the walnuts and used sugar free maple sugar.
    Both versions were excellent.
I cannot wait to make for daughter when she visits.
So many of your yummy recipes are so budget friendly and easy to modify. Thank you

  8. Say what.!!.. Banana Spit for breakfast.. yes you can. This might even go over well with the kiddos. Spilt a banana 3/4 down the middle then airfry, or bake, and top it with greek or plain yogurt, and your favorite fruit and nut toppings. In this recipe I added the healthy hot Fudge from the previous post made with homemade Cashew Butter .

My final product looked much less sophisticated than the one on the recipe site and so guess my one comment would be .. it can get messy. Being that I eat with my eyes first it was not visually my favorite breakfast but it did taste very good.

  9. I just made this for my 10 yr old son With his first bite he closed his eyes and said, “omg this is awesome.” Another winner!
